Description
The property at 44 Victoria Square is a semi-detached house built as part of a terrace development in Rostrevor, County Down, between 1882 and 1903. The development comprises three blocks: Glenmore Terrace (including numbers 42-44), Victoria Terrace (numbers 34-38), and Albert Terrace (numbers 14-22). The wider Victoria Square was facilitated by the construction of Shore Road in 1877, which accommodated the new Warrenpoint and Rostrevor Tramline.
Numbers 42-44, originally known as ‘Glenmore Terrace’, were constructed in 1882 by John Mahood; the architect remains unknown. The original occupant was Edward Brooks in 1883. Subsequent residents included Elizabeth E. Mahood, and the property was briefly occupied by the ‘Girls Friendly Society’ in 1901. By 1906, the house had been renamed ‘Windermere’. Further occupants included Margaret Weir, Theodore Livingstone, [?J.] McCartan, Henrietta Robinson, John and Julia Loverock, Mary Best (tenant in 1936, leasing from Gertrude Hinds), Eileen Hussey de Burgh, and the ‘Abbeyfield Newry & District Society Ltd.’ The property was vacant by 1972.
The house is part of a larger group value context, linked to the developments by the Mahood family (reference HB16/06/064A-E). The wider development’s construction was spurred by the area's improvement in transport links.
