Description

The site represents the former location of a single-story vernacular thatched dwelling, likely built before 1834 and demolished around 1977, when a modern house was constructed in its place. Situated on a slight rise to the south of Moss Road, approximately two miles southeast of Ballygowan, the original house was described in a 1974 survey as a single-story cottage with a thatched roof, rendered and brick chimneys, and whitewashed walls. The northeast front featured four drop-hung windows with horizontal astragals, and a glazed and panelled door located between the third and fourth windows. The building was recorded as being in fair condition and approximately 55 feet wide.

The site was marked on Ordnance Survey maps from 1834 and 1858. It was not listed in the 1834 valuation records, presumed to be below rateable value, but the adjacent land was held by John Moorhead, who likely leased it from the Gordon family of Florida Manor. In 1858, the house was occupied by a William Wightman, with the “house and offices” assessed at a low rateable value of £1-10-0. Notably, in 1974, the property was owned by another William Wightman, presumably a descendant of the 1858 occupant. Historical records, including Gordon family papers, Ordnance Survey maps, and valuation records held at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI), document the building's presence and ownership.
