Description
Sexton's Lodge is a small, single-storey rustic gothic lodge built around 1819–20 to serve St. Mary's Church in the hamlet of Kilmood, approximately 3 miles north-west of Killinchy, County Down. The building is Grade B1 listed and represents an important example of early nineteenth-century gothic styling in the parish.
The lodge exemplifies the rustic gothic aesthetic favoured in the period. Its front (west) façade is symmetrical, featuring a central double timber-sheeted door with a pointed arch fanlight, flanked by pointed arch window openings to either side. The south façade contains a similar centrally positioned pointed arch window opening. On the north side, a small lean-to addition has been attached, which has a timber-sheeted door. The rear elevation is blank except for a small, roughly square opening at low level. The exterior is finished in roughcast and painted, though it is currently shabby and dilapidated. Rendered curving walls extend to either side of the lodge.
The roof is hipped with a large overhang and boxed-in eaves, covered in Bangor blue slates. A central rendered chimney stack rises from the roof ridge. Modern PVC rainwater goods have been installed. All windows and the main door are currently boarded over, indicating the building has been vacant for some time.
The lodge was built at the same time as the parish church itself, c.1819–20. In 1820, the property was leased by Lord Downshire and David Gordon to Peter Barry, presumably the first sexton. The 1835 valuation returns record it as a 'sexton's house', and by 1861 it was occupied by Peter Taylor. The building shares stylistic similarities with the nearby Florida Manor gate lodges, which were built around the same period and are likely the work of the same architect or builder.
The lodge is part of an important group of early nineteenth-century buildings within Kilmood, including the former courthouse, school, and church—all constructed circa 1820 and all exhibiting gothic styling. The extent of listing includes the former sexton's lodge, gate, and walling.
