13 Magherascouse Road, Magherascouse, Comber, Co. Down, BT23 5RU

The site represents the footprint of a former single-storey house located on the west side of Magherascouse Road, approximately two miles south of Comber. The house was demolished in 1996 and replaced with a new dwelling. A survey from 1974 described the original house as having an attic and a lower extension to the left, along with a later extension to the rear. The roof was slated, with rendered chimney stacks. The walls were rendered and whitewashed. The main facade facing south featured two drop-hung windows with vertical astragals, and a central "Ards" style doorway. The doorway consisted of a plain stone semicircular arch with a keystone, supported by stone pilasters, and enclosed a decorated fanlight above a glazed flush panel door. The left-hand extension contained two windows, one fixed and the other top-hung, and the front of the main house measured approximately 35 feet. The house appeared on Ordnance Survey maps from 1834 and 1858. Records indicate it was likely leased from Lord Dufferin, landowner of Magherascouse townland. The symmetrical front facade and "Ards" doorway suggested a construction date around the 1830s or 1840s, a period when this style of formality became popular in the Strangford/Ards area; however, the facade may have been a later alteration to an existing property. Although the house was demolished, a large two-storey outbuilding, dated 1876, remains on the site.
