Description
A road bridge, likely dating from around 1820 to 1839, carries the Ballykeigle Road over the River Blackwater, approximately two miles west of Ballygowan. The bridge has a slightly hump-backed profile, following a bend in the road. It is constructed of rubble with a single elliptical arch. A pipe is attached above the arch on the east side, with barbed wire and spikes fixed to it to prevent climbing. Ties have been inserted into the bridge structure. The parapets are finished with rough rubble coping. The western parapet appears to have been partly rebuilt recently and has a noticeable crack running along its length. A bridge is depicted on Ordnance Survey maps from 1834 and 1858-1860, labelled ‘Blackwater Bridge’ on the latter. The structure possesses characteristics of industrial archaeological interest.
