Windmill stump, off Ballygowan Road, Ballyrush, Comber, Co. Down, BT23 5RY

The site comprises the ruined stump of a flax windmill, built sometime between 1833 and 1858, located on a hilltop west of the Ballygowan Road, approximately 1.5 miles northeast of Ballygowan in County Down. Constructed of rubble, the stump stands roughly 4.5 metres high and 4 metres in diameter, with walls approximately 0.75 metres thick. The stump now presents with two levels. On the east-facing side are two large door openings, one positioned above the other. Two smaller window openings are also visible, one at ground floor level and the other at the first floor. Fragments of timber are present inside the structure, and the roof is now formed from corrugated iron.

The windmill is depicted on an Ordnance Survey map of 1858 but not on the 1834 map. Valuation records from around 1863 indicate that it was then leased from the Marquis of Londonderry, proprietor of the Ballyrush townland, by a John Alexander Gowdy. According to a secondary source, the mill was later used as a dwelling. The structure is noted as derelict and of industrial archaeological interest.
