Description
The ruin is of a windmill, likely dating from between 1820 and 1839. It is situated off Comber Road, near Ballyministragh, Killinchy, County Down. The building was marked on an Ordnance Survey map from 1859-60 as a "flax mill."
The remaining stump measures approximately 3.4 metres in diameter, including walls about 0.6 metres thick, with a height of roughly 3.7 metres. It is constructed from random rubble and is roofless. A large, irregular opening is visible on the eastern side, likely the original doorway. The windmill stands on a rise to the west of Comber Road, less than 1.5 miles north of the hamlet of Balloo.
Adjacent to the windmill, to the east and alongside the road, is a single-storey rubble-built gable building, currently used as a blacksmith’s forge. This forge contains a loose date stone inscribed "Built by David Fitchey, Anno 1796."
The windmill is depicted on an Ordnance Survey map from 1834, and although it is not mentioned in contemporary valuation records, the land surrounding it, including the forge, was then owned by David Fitchey. By 1859, the windmill was recorded as a flax mill on the Ordnance Survey map, but is notably absent from the second valuation records of around 1861. Land around the windmill was held at the time of this valuation by a David Fitchey, possibly the son of the above. The ruin is recorded as derelict and is considered to be of industrial archaeological interest.
