Description

The structure is a former windmill tower of pre-1810 origin, with an attached single-storey section added circa 1835-1855, now fully converted into a dwelling house. No original windmill machinery remains. The tower is situated on a slight rise to the west of Main Street, on the southern edge of the village of Killinchy. It measures approximately 10 metres in height and 9 metres in diameter, with battered walls that are rendered and painted. The tower has three storeys and a flat roof, with window openings (now with modern frames) on each floor. A doorway with a modern glazed door is located on the western side of the ground floor. Attached to the north-east side is a long, single-storey section with a gabled roof, featuring modern doors and windows, plain rendered walls, and asbestos-free slates.

The mill appears on James Williamson’s map of 1810 and the Ordnance Survey map of 1834, where it is identified as a ‘corn windmill’. Valuation records from circa 1835 indicate the mill was then in the possession of Thomas Potter of Ard View House, to the south. These records also note the mill had been idle for four years. A single-storey section was added to the north-east side by 1859/60, and the property was leased to a Hugh McGilton, who also owned Ballycopeland Windmill near Millisle. The windmill was converted to a dwelling house around 1983. The structure possesses industrial archaeological interest.
