Dry Closet, Ard View, 31 Ardview Road, Killinchy, Newtownards, Co Down, BT23 6TG

This is a small, rubble-built dry closet of possible 18th-century origin, having group value with Ard View house. The building is approximately 2.5 metres by 2.5 metres, with a slated hipped roof topped by an urn pinnacle. It is situated a short distance to the northeast of Ard View house, half a mile south of the village of Killinchy. The western face features a doorway with a sheeted timber door and a three-pane sidelight (with two horizontal glazing bars). Internally, there was originally seating for three persons, though the outer seats are now boarded over. The building is surrounded by trees and bushes and is approached via a semicircular headed archway with brick dressings in a rubble-built wall.

The dry closet may have been built around the same time as Ard View house, which may date from 1722, although the urn decoration (if original) suggests a slightly later date, possibly between 1720 and 1739. It is depicted on the Ordnance Survey map of 1834. It likely became obsolete in the mid-19th century with the introduction of internal water closets, although it may have continued in use for farm hands into the 20th century.
