Description

Rose Cottage is a long, single-storey house likely dating to before 1834, with significant renovations occurring around 1900 and again in the 1960s and 1970s. It is situated on the east side of Main Street in Killinchy. The house has been extensively modernised and extended.

The front, west-facing facade features a centrally positioned modern doorway with a brick pier surround, topped by a shallow, felted gabled roof forming a porch. The porch shelters a modern panelled and glazed door with a large sidelight. Four sash windows are located to the left of the entrance, with two further windows positioned to the right, each varying slightly in size. The south gable is blank, while the north gable adjoins a gabled outbuilding. The rear of the property is dominated by a large, single-storey, flat-roofed return with modern windows and a doorway. The entire facade is rendered with limestone chip render, featuring chamfered quoins and smooth rendered surrounds to the windows. A chamfered base is present. The roof is covered in Bangor blue slates and incorporates three yellow brick chimney stacks. The windows are modern PVC frames. A low, rendered garden wall runs along the front.

An identical building is depicted on Ordnance Survey maps from 1834 and 1859-60, suggesting the present structure largely corresponds with that earlier layout. At the time of the first valuation survey around 1835, the property was considered to be below rateable value. Records from 1861 indicate that the house and an associated office were leased from Robert Potter of Ard View to John Finlay, an ancestor of the current owner. The presence of yellow brick chimneys and the largely regular, plain sash windows suggest the house underwent renovation in the early 20th century. The enlarged entrance and flat-roofed extension are characteristic of more recent alterations, dating to the 1960s or 1970s.
