Description
Killinchy Presbyterian Church is an early and fine cruciform Presbyterian church of considerable rural charm, located in a picturesque hollow on the north side of Craigarusky Road, northeast of Balloo crossroads and less than half a mile west of Killinchy village.
The church was originally constructed in 1714, largely due to the efforts of Reverend James Reid, and was extended to assume its present cruciform plan in 1739 to accommodate an increasing congregation. The building is finished in lined render and comprises four wings, each almost symmetrical. Each long wall has two evenly spaced windows, with a centrally positioned doorway below a central window within an otherwise plain gable. The pointed arch windows feature simple Y-tracery, with each lancet having margins. All windows are surmounted by moulded drip stones with label stops.
The southwest gable has centrally positioned diagonally sheeted timber double doors, above which was a second set of double doors reached by an external staircase, now removed. Directly above these upper doors is a pointed arched window. The northwest gable is similar in arrangement. The northeast and southeast gables are comparable, though the upper double doors here have been replaced with a multi-pane window. Simple stone cornices with blocking courses exist between the upper and lower doors.
The roof is finished in Bangor blue slates with decorative finials to each gable, and the building has cast iron rainwater goods. A small lean-to boiler house, probably added in the 20th century, is situated to the west side of the northwest wing, with a tall integrated chimney stack rising from its roof.
The Killinchy Presbyterian congregation was established in 1630. By the early 19th century, as documented in the Ordnance Survey Memoirs, the church was noted as capable of holding 700 persons. The building was held by the Arian or non-subscribing portion of the congregation until 1839, when they were forced to relinquish it and construct a separate church to the south in Raffery townland.
Late Victorian renovations were undertaken by Reverend William Smyth in the 1890s. These included installation of heating and new pews, the addition of label moulding to all openings, and construction of the boundary wall with wrought iron gates. Reverend Smyth also oversaw the building of the Anderson Memorial Hall. The most recent significant alteration occurred around 1940–1950, when the three external stairs providing gallery access were removed, leaving ladder access as the only option. Apart from this removal, the building remains largely intact.
The church is well maintained and nestles within its own graveyard. The late Victorian boundary wall features two sets of wrought iron gates and pillars. The listing extends to the church, gates, pillars, and gate screen.
