Description
Hill Farm is a two-storey farmhouse likely dating to the 1840s or 1850s, situated on the southeastern side of Whiterock Road, just west of Killinchy village. The asymmetrical front facade, facing northwest, features an "Ards" doorway centrally positioned on the left, with a panelled door and semicircular fanlight. A sash window with Georgian panes is located to the left of the entrance, with a similar window to the far right. Above each ground-floor opening is a corresponding first-floor window, though smaller in size. The southwest gable has a window similar to the front on the ground floor, with a smaller window above it. The northeast gable mirrors this arrangement. The rear of the house has a modern glazed door slightly left of centre, accompanied by a small sash window to the left. Two modern windows are situated to the right of the doorway, and the openings may have been altered. Three sash windows are positioned on the first floor, echoing the layout on the left side of the ground floor. The exterior is finished in rough cast with chamfered quoins. The roof is gabled, covered in Bangor blue slates and featuring red clay parapets. Two brick chimney stacks are present, along with metal roof goods. Rubble-built outbuildings are located to the rear and northeast.
An Ordnance Survey map from 1859-60 shows a building on this site, likely corresponding to the existing farmhouse. Valuation records from 1861 indicate the house was then occupied by a William Irvine and had a rateable value of £2, which was relatively low. Renovations revealed that the stonework on the upper right quarter of the front facade doesn’t match the rest, suggesting the house might have initially been single-storey and part two-storey, supported by the asymmetrical facade and unusual internal layout. However, the building's depth makes that origin less likely. The sash windows have been replaced, and the red brick chimneys, ridges, and parapets appear to date to the late 19th or early 20th century.
