Description

This is a single-storey house of probable pre-1834 origin, significantly extended in recent times with a large wing or return. All windows are modern. The house is situated on the southeastern side of Ardview Road, directly opposite the entrance to Ard View House, less than a mile south of Killinchy village.

The front, or northwest, facade features a centrally positioned timber-sheeted door with a modern window to its right. To the left of the doorway are three similar windows, the one closest to the door being double the size. The southwest gable is blank, while the northeast side has been greatly extended, more than doubling the house's size. This extension, forming a right-angle to the original house, is primarily single-storey; however, it rises to two levels where the ground slopes to the southeast. The extension features modern windows and doors throughout, including a chamfered section where the original northeast gable once stood.

The rear of the original section has a small, left-of-centre lean-to extension, with a sheeted door on its southwest face and a modern window resembling those on the front facade on its southeast face. Another window is located to the left of this extension, followed by two more to the right. The entire facade is finished with a ‘wavy’ render intended to mimic the uneven appearance of a whitewashed rubble facade. The roof is gabled and covered with Bangor blue slates, with two rendered chimney stacks on the original section. The building has PVC rainwater goods.

The Ordnance Survey maps of 1834 and 1859–60 show a building on this site that likely corresponds to the original section of the house. The proximity of the building to the entrance of Ard View House has led to speculation that it may have been built by the Potter family, who occupied Ard View, as a gate lodge. While property records confirm the Potters once owned the house, it is located on the opposite side of the road from Ard View’s entrance, and therefore could not be considered a conventional gate lodge. The large wing or return was added relatively recently, around 1990.
