Description

Ballymorran Close is an attractive one and a half storey former farmhouse of probable pre-1834 origin, located within a clachan-like grouping at Ballymorran Close, to the south of Ballymorran Road, roughly one mile south-east of Killinchy village in County Down. The building has been recently renovated; whilst the exterior has been largely restored, the interior has been substantially altered, reducing its historic character.

The substantial house features a gabled roof covered in Bangor blue slates with concrete parapets and four evenly spaced rendered chimney stacks. The entire facade is finished in plain render and painted. The west-facing front facade has a left-of-centre doorway with a panelled door, fanlight with margins, and three-pane sidelights with panelled aprons. To the left of the doorway are two sash windows with Georgian panes, and to the right are two similar windows, widely spaced. The north gable displays a four-pane window at ground floor level, with a similar window at attic level to the right. The south gable has a similar arrangement but handed, with the addition of a large lean-to PVC conservatory containing a glazed doorway leading into the main house. To the rear are three unevenly spaced four-pane windows of varying size, positioned to the left and centre, with a timber-sheeted and glazed door to the right.

The semi-formal front facade and entrance may represent a circa 1830s-1840s attempt to give the building an air of classical proportion, with a dummy chimney possibly added to complete the illusion. A rendered wall to the front, enclosing the garden, features simple arched wrought-iron railings, possibly of late 19th-century date. PVC rainwater goods are present.

To the north of the house stands a collection of recently renovated outbuildings, a section of which is thatched. To the north and across the road is another long single-storey house bearing a datestone reading "S T M 1702" on its front facade, though this property has been modernised in fairly recent times. The Archaeological Survey of County Down raises questions regarding the authenticity of this 1702 datestone.

Historical records show a building at this site on Ordnance Survey maps of 1834 and 1859-60, which probably corresponds with the present dwelling. The clachan-like grouping appears to have its origins in the early 18th century. Circa 1835 valuation returns note that the dwelling was in the possession of William Bernard (or Bennard) and that outbuildings consisted of a carhouse, barn, and cowhouse. By 1861, Mary Bishop resided within the property, which was apparently leased from John Cleland, presumably of Stormont.
