Description
This is a long, single-storey vernacular dwelling, likely dating to before 1834, located on the east side of Quarterland Road, approximately two miles southeast of Killinchy, County Down. The house sits on the coast of a sheltered inlet within Strangford Lough.
The front (south) façade features a modern glazed conservatory/porch centrally positioned, with the original entrance now enclosed by a glazed door within. To the left of the porch are two sash windows with six panes over six, while four similar windows are located to the right. The west gable is blank. A modern single-storey extension with a mono-pitched roof in two sections is attached to the east gable, featuring modern windows on its north, south, and east faces. The rear façade exhibits four small windows of varying size and shape, all with modern frames and cills, and a partly glazed rear door situated between the first and second windows. The exterior is finished with rough cast paint. The steeply pitched roof is covered in concrete tiles, and a large flat-roofed, timber-faced dormer with four modern windows projects from the right side of the rear roofline. Three brick chimney stacks are present: two to the gables and one on the central ridge. A Velux window is located at the front of the property. The building incorporates PVC window and rainwater goods. A two- and single-storey line of gabled outbuildings extends eastward. A well within the front garden is currently covered by a gravestone from the early 1800s, reportedly removed from the nearby ruins of Rathgorman church.
A building is depicted on Ordnance Survey maps from 1834 and 1859 on this site. A valuation survey around 1838 identified it as a dwelling then owned by John Sturgeon, measuring 65 feet by 18.5 feet by 7.5 feet, dimensions consistent with the present property. In the second valuation of 1861, the house was occupied by Robert Calvert, who leased it from Anna Harper. The current owner believes the house belonged to a Neill family in the early to mid-20th century.
