Rathgorman church ruin, Quarterland Road, Rathgorman, Killinchy, Co. Down

The remains of a small, rectangular church of probable late medieval origin (roughly 1300s-1400s) survive as fragmentary and overgrown rubble on a hilltop, located south of a sheltered inlet and east of Quarterland Road, approximately two miles southeast of Killinchy. The building originally measured approximately 14 meters by 7.5 meters, with external walls approximately 1 meter and 0.75 meters thick. The presence of a nearby motte suggests the site may have been part of an earlier manorial group, possibly dating from around 1180-1200. A broken headstone, dating from around 1800 and reportedly taken from near the ruin, has been found in a nearby garden, suggesting the ground was used for burials until at least that date, although the site is not marked as a graveyard on the 1834 Ordnance Survey map and no headstones are currently visible. The Archaeological Survey of Co. Down indicates a doorway was probably located at the west end of the church. The site is currently derelict and regarded as a monument.
