Description
The site comprises the ruined stump of a windmill, likely dating to the late 18th or early 19th century. It stands on a slight rise in a field to the west of Ringdufferin House, near Ringdufferin Road, approximately 2.5 miles north-northeast of Killyleagh. The substantial rubble walls remain largely intact, although the roof is absent. The windmill measures approximately 9.5 metres internally by 6.25 metres in height and was originally harled. A timber-sheeted door is present at ground level, with a small window opening above it.
It is believed the windmill likely belonged to the Baillie family, owners of Ringdufferin House, and may have been built by James Baillie around 1790, coinciding with extensions to the house itself. The structure appears on an Ordnance Survey map from 1834, but is absent from the 1837 valuation rolls. While shown on the 1859 Ordnance Survey map, it is not specifically labelled as a windmill at that time, indicating possible abandonment shortly after 1834. Another windmill, situated slightly south of this one, is depicted on James Williamson’s 1810 map and the 1834 Ordnance Survey map, but was no longer present by 1859. No trace of this second windmill remains. The site is noted as derelict and holds industrial archaeological interest, representing a monument of local significance.
