Description
The site contains the ruined stump of a flax windmill, likely dating from around 1820 to 1839, though it may have originally been a corn mill. The circular stump measures approximately 4.5 metres in diameter, including walls which are about 0.75 metres thick, and stands around 3.5 metres high. The construction is of random rubble and is roofless. A doorway opening is visible on the western side. The windmill is situated on a rise to the east of Comber Road, less than a mile north of the hamlet of Balloo. It was recorded on an Ordnance Survey map of 1834 and identified as a “flax mill” on an Ordnance Survey map from 1859-60. Valuation records from around 1861 identify it as belonging to Thomas Bell. A nearby cottage has a millstone in its front garden, suggesting a possible earlier use for corn grinding. The site is currently derelict and considered to be of industrial archaeological interest.
