Description
This is a largely plain, single-storey gabled house likely built before 1834, situated on the west side of Craigarusky Road, approximately a mile north of Killinchy. The front (east) facade features a centrally positioned modern glazed door, framed by overgrown shrubbery and an arched surround. To the left of the door is a sash window with horizontal glazing bars and a simple surround that appears to be from the 1930s. To the right of the door are two similar windows, with a third window set slightly lower on the north side of the house, which incorporates a small attic level. The south gable is blank, while the north gable has two small attic windows with modern frames and surrounds matching those on the front.
A large single-storey lean-to extension is attached to the left rear of the house, featuring a large modern kitchen window on its west facade. Further to the right is a smaller, flat-roofed extension with a modern window on its north facade, merging into a larger single-storey gabled section, also with modern windows. A lean-to conservatory is attached to the south face of the small flat-roofed extension and the rear of the main house. Between the two main extensions, a section of the rear facade of the original house is exposed, featuring a modern window. The entire building is largely finished with rough cast rendering and painted. The main roof is gabled, covered primarily with asbestos slates, with some Bangor blue slates to the rear and on the lean-to extension to the left. Three brick chimney stacks are present, along with metal rainwater goods.
A building of a similar size to the present structure is depicted on Ordnance Survey maps from 1834 and 1859-60. The house was not included in the first valuation survey, likely due to its low rateable value, but was occupied in approximately 1861 by a Hamilton Caughey, who leased it from a John Cleland. The house has undergone several renovations during the twentieth century, during which time the rear extensions were added. The gabled portion of the south extension may have originally been a detached outbuilding. The building exhibits vernacular characteristics.
