Description
This is a former schoolhouse, built in 1826 and subsequently extended at the rear on several occasions. In 1985, it was converted into a dwelling. The building is located on the north side of Ballydorn Road, near its junction with Killakin Road, approximately a mile north of Killinchy village.
Originally, the south facade was the front of the schoolhouse. It now features six windows with modern frames designed to resemble sash windows with Georgian-style panes. The windows are surrounded by plain render. Above the third window from the left is a small panel inscribed “BUILT AD 1826.” The window on the far left originally served as the entrance and features a panel with an inscription dating from 1931. The west facade has a smaller window to the right, mimicking the style of those at the front. The east gable is blank but shows evidence of two blocked-up windows.
To the rear, a projecting gabled section features a recent bowed window in the gable. To the right of this is a large, flat-roofed section with an open porch containing a modern entrance door. A broad, modern window is situated to the right of the porch on the rear of the flat-roofed section, with a further modern door to the far right. The entire facade is covered in rough cast render and painted. The main roof is hipped and covered with Bangor blue slates and red clay ridge tiles, with a brick chimney stack on the east side. A small brick chimney stack is also present on the flat roof at the rear, and the roof has PVC rainwater goods. A rendered wall runs along the front of the property at the roadside.
The schoolhouse was erected in 1826 and was one of twelve schools noted in the Ordnance Survey memoirs of around 1833 for the Killinchy parish. Initial valuation records from around 1835 identify it as a National School, a designation confirmed on the Ordnance Survey map of 1859-60. Later known as ‘Ardmillan Public Elementary School’, the building was 'reconditioned' in 1931 and closed in 1982 before its later conversion to a dwelling.
