Description

This large stone building was constructed in 1789 as an intended Presbyterian Meeting House on the east side of Killinchy Road at its intersection with Ardmillan Road, near Lisbane in County Down. However, it was never fitted out internally nor dedicated for worship, and has been used as a farm outbuilding and barn throughout its long existence.

The building is a large gabled, single-storey structure built in split stone rubble with a corrugated iron roof. The east façade features two large door openings, each fitted with sliding doors. To the north and south of this façade are small stone lean-to sheds. The north gable has no openings but has a small lean-to shed which served as a dry closet for the adjacent property. The south gable contains one centrally placed but damaged sliding sash and case window with Georgian panes. The present owners have erected a small plaque below this window inscribed "The Meeting House 1789". The west face has six high-level and three low-level windows, all almost square and without window bars. No evidence of any ecclesiastical doorways or window openings could be discerned.

The building's history is documented in contemporary newspaper accounts. A notice published in the Belfast News-Letter on 19 May 1789 called for masons and carpenters to submit proposals for the construction. However, the project became embroiled in congregational dispute. A notice appeared on 23 June declaring the meeting house "not only un-necessary…but may prove injurious to the dissenting interest", attributed to James Lowry, the Session clerk. This was immediately contradicted by a counter-notice signed by Alexander Johnson, the new Session Clerk, arguing for the "indispensable necessity" of the building. Subsequent newspaper articles reveal the conflict was rooted in personal objections to the minister, Reverend George McEwen, with Johnson conducting a public vendetta against him. Despite Johnson's efforts to frame the matter as one of religious liberty, it became apparent that his views did not represent those of his colleagues. By early July 1789, the original signatories to the building notice declared their intention to continue, bearing no ill will to McEwen. The intended congregation of Lisbane appears never to have met for worship, the split within the Killinchy congregation apparently healed, and the scheme was abandoned. The building remained unfitted and unblessed, serving only as an outbuilding.

By the time of the revised Ordnance Survey map (1859–60), a house named "Asphalto Cottage" had been built to the rear. An 1861 valuation lists this property as belonging to a Reverend McCaw, suggesting the land may have remained in church hands. The building is of little architectural interest and is now recorded only in the heritage register.
