Kempstones Corner, Old Forge, 30 -32 Quarry Road, Lisbane, Comber, Co Down, ?BT23 5NF / BT 23 6ED

This small forge dates from at least the early 19th century, likely between 1820 and 1839, and is situated on the north side of Quarry Road, near its junction with Castle Espie Road, in the townland of Lisbane. It is a rubble-built structure with a gabled form, set close to a slightly taller gabled outhouse on its west side. The north front has a large opening, formerly a doorway, on the left and a window opening to the right, fitted with a modern timber frame lacking astragals. A similar window opening with the same modern frame is also present on the south face, to the left. The east gable appears blank and is heavily overgrown with vegetation. The original roof has been replaced with a modern covering of alternating strips of corrugated iron and corrugated perspex sheets, which significantly diminishes the building’s architectural value. Despite this alteration, much of the original interior remains in evidence. The forge, along with a nearby house and other outbuildings, is depicted on Ordnance Survey maps from 1833/4 and 1859/60. The site was abandoned in the 1950s and subsequently acquired, with renovations beginning in the early 1980s, although limited work has been undertaken on the forge itself. The site has importance as an example of rural industrial archaeology. Current use is as outbuildings, and the building is privately owned. The building is designated as a Record Only entry.
