Description
The building on Tullynakill Road, Ballydrain, near Killinchy, is a largely plain, single-storey house with modern windows, pan tiles, and a recent rear extension. It likely began as a smaller dwelling before 1834 and was enlarged in the latter half of the 19th century, probably between 1880 and 1899. The last section of thatch was removed in 1980, and a substantial rear extension was added around 1997.
The house is situated on a rise at the end of a lane to the east of the Tullynakill Road, approximately 3.5 miles north of Killinchy. The front (southwest) facade features a centrally positioned timber panelled door flanked by two-pane sidelights. To the left of the door is a window with a modern frame, and two similar windows are located to the right. The northwest gable has a similar window on its left side, while the southeast gable is blank. The left side of the rear elevation is dominated by a large, single-storey extension built around 1997, also featuring modern windows and doors. Two windows, matching those on the front facade, are positioned centrally and towards the centre right of the rear facade of the original house. The facade is finished with roughcast render, painted with a smooth rendered recessed base. The roof is gabled with a slight overhang and is covered in pan tiles, with three rendered chimney stacks. The building has PVC rainwater goods.
Historical records, including Ordnance Survey maps of 1834 and 1859-60, show a smaller building on this site, which may correspond to a section of the present house. While not initially assessed for rates in the valuation returns of approximately 1835, it was owned by Samuel Kelly around 1861 and leased to either Robert Kelly or Martha Coey.
