Description
This is a large, sprawling house located on the east side of Ballyglighorn Road, approximately four miles north of the village of Killinchy. The house incorporates a single-storey linear dwelling likely dating before 1834, but it has undergone extensive renovation and expansion in recent times, more than doubling its original size. It is now largely modern in character and bears little resemblance to its original appearance.
A building is depicted on Ordnance Survey maps from 1834 and 1859-60 at the location of the original portion of the house. Valuation records from around 1835 indicate the property was below rateable value, and the supplementary map records for the area are not available for detailed comparison.
The original section of the house, as surveyed in 1974, was a modest vernacular farmhouse with whitewashed rubble walls, small sash windows, and a thatched roof. The front, north-facing facade has a centrally positioned sheeted door with three modern windows to the left and a smaller window to the right. An extension to the east side is set at a right angle to the original, featuring a large gabled bay on both front and rear elevations, and large modern windows and doors. The rear of the original section has been completely extended with a part single, part two-storey section, which is entirely modern in appearance, including a large gabled half dormer. The west gable of the original section is blank. The entire facade is finished in roughcast and painted, with all roof sections gabled and covered in asbestos slates featuring a slight overhang and PVC rainwater goods. A single rendered chimney stack remains on the original section. The house was completely renovated and extended around the late 1980s.
