Description

A prehistoric chambered cairn sits in the middle of a field east of the Killinchy Road, approximately two miles south of Comber. Originally believed to be of Neolithic and Early Bronze Age origin, the cairn is now visible as a rough oval arrangement of basalt boulders of varying sizes. The boulders appear to have been rearranged, and at least one new stone has been added in recent years. The structure is understood to have functioned as a mausoleum, and remains in that use today. The site, referenced as SMR No.DOW 10:36, has been discussed in the 'Ulster Journal of Archaeology' (Vol.20, 1957, pp.35-6) and the 'Archaeological Survey of Co. Down' (Belfast HMSO 1966, pp.78-79). The site is also considered a monument.
