Description
The property at 6 Tullynakill Road, Ballydrain, Killinchy, is a large, modern two-story house constructed around 1980. It incorporates some original fabric from a previous farmhouse, likely built before 1834 and subsequently enlarged over time. The modern house bears no resemblance to its predecessor.
The house sits on the east side of Tullynakill Road, approximately 2.5 miles north of Killinchy. The northern section of the modern dwelling incorporates the stone rubble walls of the earlier farmhouse's two-story portion, though the older house was largely demolished and replaced with the current building; the modern design differs significantly from the original in terms of layout, window and door arrangement, frames, doors, roof, and roof covering. According to the owner, the original farmhouse was mostly demolished in the early 1980s.
A building is depicted on Ordnance Survey maps from 1834 and 1859-60 at this location. Valuation records from around 1835 indicate possible occupancy by a Robert Kelly, while a second survey from approximately 1861 revealed the property was held by the representatives of Henry Boal, who had leased it from Samuel Murland. It is believed that the early 19th century farmhouse was primarily, if not entirely, single-story.
