Description

Glenthorne House is a house that dates back to the 14th century and was remodeled in the 17th century, with a front that may have been added in the mid-19th century in an 18th-century style, possibly attributed to Christopher Kempster. The building features a freestone front with plain ashlar raised quoins, while the rest is made of rubble. It has Cotswold stone roofs and ashlar end chimneys.

The front of the house is two storeys high with a parapet and stands on a plinth. It has three bays, with the outer bays paired and fitted with glazing-bar sash windows in raised flat surrounds that include cock-beads and keystones. There are simple offset courses acting as a cornice. The central entrance features a four-panel door with stone brackets supporting a flat hood. Adjacent to the south gable return is a gabled stair-turret, along with lower one- and two-storey extensions that have mullion windows.

Inside, there is a late 14th-century small pointed doorway aligned with the entrance, featuring wave moulding. A late medieval fireplace has moulded corbels supporting a simple hood, and the bressumer on the north side is moulded with traces of painted decoration. The floor joists are double-chamfered, and there is a newel stair in the turret. Remnants of Jacobean panelling can be found on the first-floor landing. The attribution to Kempster is considered unlikely. As of 1761, the building was still functioning as an inn, known as The Star Inn, and cobbles discovered below the right-hand bay suggest it may have served as a coach entry.
