Description
Old Beams is a cottage that dates from the 17th century, with alterations made in the early to mid-19th century. It is constructed of rubble and features a slate roof and a brick chimney on the left side. The building has a single-cell plan that includes partitions for an alley to the south, stairs to the north, and a lobby. There is a 18th-century rear wing and later attached premises. The cottage is two stories high and has one window on the first floor, which is a sash with vertical glazing bars, and a glazing-bar sash on the ground floor, both featuring a wooden lintel.
To the right, there is a ledged oak alleyway entry in a chamfered surround, and the interior includes a studded passage wall to the north and a cobbled alley. A corbelled side beam to the south has close-spaced joists, with the corbel being a re-set piece of a moulded window surround or mullion. The cottage was occupied from around 1643 to 1676 by Roger Daniell, a mason, who was a tenant of the Grammar School.
