Description

A compact two-storey house built around 1850, situated on the south side of Ardmillan Road near its junction with Killinchy Road, approximately 1.5 miles north-west of Killinchy village. The house retains much of its original character both internally and externally, though alterations from the 1960s to the rear and gable openings have compromised some of its early Victorian character.

The west-facing front facade is symmetrical, featuring a central panelled and glazed door with a three-pane fanlight. To the left is a sash window with margin panes (two small panes flanking each vertical side of the sashes), mirrored by a similar window to the right. The first floor has three comparable but smaller sash windows. The north gable contains two ground-floor windows with modern frames that attempt to echo the style of the front elevation, with a similar window to the first floor on the right. The south gable is largely obscured by a lean-to conservatory added around 1960, which contains French doors on its left side; above this, the first floor has a window with a modern metal frame. The rear elevation features a centrally positioned return of around 1900 with a modern recessed door and large metal window to its south face, and a sash window with horizontal glazing bar and a smaller modern-framed window to its north face. The main house rear facade has a sash window (matching the front type) to the left on the ground floor and two metal-framed windows on the first floor.

The front facade and gables are finished in lined but unpainted cement render, with climbing plant growth partially covering the front. The rear and return are rendered in unpainted rough cast. All roofs are gabled, covered in Bangor blue slates with slight overhang and decorative barges to the main roof. Two rendered gable chimney stacks are present. PVC rainwater goods are fitted. A dry closet stands to the south, adjacent to the neighbouring barn's gable.

Historical evidence suggests the site was occupied from at least 1834, when an earlier, smaller building appears on the Ordnance Survey map, then in the possession of Adam Shiel. The present building likely dates from between 1835 and 1859, and is probably the structure marked "Dispensary" on the revised OS map of 1859–60. Valuation records from 1861 note it was leased from William Barry Ritchie by Dr. Ringland. Old medicine bottles discovered within the house support this medical use. The return was not part of the original structure and was likely added in the late 19th or early 20th century.

The most significant alteration occurred in 1960 when architect L. Redmond oversaw extensive modifications including broadening the first-floor rear windows, inserting new openings on each gable (a window on the north and a doorway on the south), renovating the kitchen and return, dividing the main south ground-floor room to create a bathroom, and constructing the lean-to conservatory. These 1960s changes, while documented, are not considered harmonious with the house's early Victorian character.
