Description
80 Comber Road is a single storey gabled house built in 1794, located at the end of a lane to the west of Comber Road, less than a mile northwest of Killinchy. The original structure has been substantially renovated and extended in recent years, with two large two storey projections added to the rear, both post-1960.
The front (east) facade features a central timber panelled and glazed door with a semicircular radial fanlight and large two pane sidelights. On either side of the door are large windows with modern frames designed to resemble double sash windows with vertical glazing bars. Between the right hand window and the door is a small stone panel inscribed 'Built by Wm. Waddell 1794'. The gabled ends are blank. Three small cast iron skylights are set into the front roof. Three brick chimney stacks rise from the main roof.
The rear has been substantially altered and extended. The northern projection has an asymmetric gabled roof and features a small two pane window to the ground floor of its north facade. A lean-to section attached to the south facade of this projection contains modern patio doors. The larger projection to the south also has modern patio doors within a lean-to section and a gabled half-dormer with a double sash window to its north facade, with a modern window to its south facade. The rear facade of the main house contains a window matching the front design, a timber sheeted door to the left with a chamfered edge to the wall, a sash window to the right of this door, and a smaller sash window to the first floor. A Velux window is set into the rear lean-to roof.
The building is finished in render that is largely painted. All roofs are gabled and covered with Bangor blue slates. PVC rainwater goods are fitted throughout. A round gate pillar is attached to the right side of the front facade.
Historic records confirm a building stood on this site in 1834 and 1859-60. Valuation records of circa 1835 record the house in possession of David Donnan, whilst by 1861 it was leased from the Londonderry estate through a middleman by John Darby. The house was renovated circa 1970, with windows possibly enlarged at this stage or earlier, and has undergone thorough modern renovation recently. The interior is entirely modern.
