Description
The ruin is of a small church, likely dating from the late medieval period, and probably once associated with the nearby Ringhaddy Castle, originally built in the 1400s but partly rebuilt around 1600. The castle is believed to have been built by the Savages of The Ards. The church is situated on a rise, apparently within a circular earthwork, to the south of Castle Island, on the west coast of Strangford Lough, approximately three miles southwest of Killinchy.
The rectangular church measures roughly 14 metres by 8 metres externally, with walls approximately one metre thick. The building was gabled, and substantial portions of the rubble walling remain, with openings visible in the north, south, and east walls. The east gable appears to have contained a large window, and there are entrances to the west sides of both the north and south walls. The walls are now overgrown in places, and a fence surrounds the ruin.
Like many small rural churches, the building was probably gradually abandoned during the later 16th and early 17th centuries. Local people had little knowledge of the church by 1833, according to the Ordnance Survey Memoirs. The ruin is now in state care and is considered a monument.
