Ballybryan Windmill, at 12 Portaferry Road, Ballybryan, Greyabbey, Newtownards, Co. Down, BT22 2RU

The ruin of an eighteenth-century windmill stands within a field on a rise approximately half a mile south of Greyabbey. This four-level windmill likely existed before 1777. Most of the tower remains as a rubble-built stump, approximately 10.5 meters high and 5.8 meters in diameter, though the rotating cap and external features are lost. Two ground-level doorways, now partly blocked and with segmental arch heads, provide access, and a square recess above the south doorway may have once contained a date plaque. Several upper-level openings remain, some with damaged dressings. A small extension is visible on the east side. Fragments of a cast iron cog track, which would have allowed the cap to rotate, are found at the top of the stump and at its base. The building appears to have been finished with rough cast rendering, remnants of which are still visible. The windmill is depicted on Taylor and Skinner’s road map of 1777 and James Williamson’s map of 1810, and it seems to have functioned as a supplementary mill to the nearby Bootown water mill. Its presence is also documented in Ordnance Survey maps and valuation records from the 1830s to the 1930s. The site retains industrial archaeological interest and is currently recorded as derelict.
