Description

This is a small, low, two-storey terrace shop, likely built in the mid-19th century, with a more recent shop front. It is situated on the southeastern side of Main Street in Greyabbey. The building has gabled main and return roofs covered with Bangor blue slates. The front facade is rendered with lines, while the rear return is rough cast. Cast iron rainwater goods are present.

The front (northwestern) elevation is asymmetrical. At ground floor level is a newly installed shop front designed to resemble a traditional style, featuring a recessed, glazed entrance with a fanlight and sidelight to the left, and a large, multi-pane window to the right. A painted timber sign with raised gold lettering is positioned above the shop front. The first floor has two plain sash windows. The rear has a long, two-storey gabled return with various loft and window openings – part of this return is associated with the adjacent property at number 11.

Historical records, including Ordnance Survey maps from 1834 and approximately 1860, indicate a building existed on this site at that time, though definitive confirmation is difficult. Documentary evidence from the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) includes various valuation records and Ordnance Survey maps spanning from the 1830s to the early 20th century. A photograph of Main Street, Greyabbey, taken looking southwest, is held in the W.A. Green Collection.

The building exhibits architectural interest due to its style, proportions, and limited ornamentation. Despite alterations, including the replacement shop front, it retains group value within the streetscape and holds local historical interest. It was formerly used as a house and is now occupied as a shop.
