Description

8 Main Street is a long, plain and vernacular-like two-storey house of possible pre-1834 construction, set within a terrace on the north-west side of Main Street, Greyabbey. It formerly contained a shop and now has modern window frames and doors.

The front south-east elevation is asymmetrical. To the right on the ground floor is a timber glazed entrance door with a large PVC window to its right, featuring simulated Georgian panes and a narrow smooth cement surround. A similar but slightly larger window sits to the left of the door. Both ground floor windows have been enlarged in fairly recent times; the window to the right formerly matched the size of the first floor windows, whilst the window to the left was originally a shop door with a window similar to those on the first floor. To the far left is a large garage opening with a metal roller door, set within a former coach arch. Three smaller windows, set in original openings, occupy the first floor with frames similar to their original form. The exposed north-east gable is blank. No access to the rear is available, although the latest Ordnance Survey map indicates a large return structure.

The gabled roof is covered with Bangor blue slates and features a single yellow brick chimney on the north-east gable. The front façade is finished in painted roughcast, with cast iron rainwater goods.

An Ordnance Survey map of 1834 shows a building on this site, part of a short terrace whose south-west end stood beside the original road to Newtownards. The house may therefore be of early nineteenth-century origin. The proximity of the upper floor windows to the eaves suggests that the roof may have been raised at some stage. In recent times, the ground floor section to the south-west served as a general store. A slightly taller terrace to the south-west of this house was built after circa 1834 and stands partly on the site of the former old Newtownards Road.
