Description
5 Main Street, Greyabbey
A two storey house built after circa 1920, set within a terrace on the south-east side of Main Street. Now in use as a shop. The building features mock timber frame rendering and recent top hung windows.
The main gabled roof is covered with asbestos cement slates to the front and a mixture of asbestos cement and asbestos free slates to the rear, with a single brick chimney stack at the centre. The north-west facing front facade is asymmetrical. It comprises a shop doorway slightly left of centre, with a timber and glazed door flanked by a bevel jointed surround including keystone and shoulder blocks. To the left stands a four pane timber window with segmental arch heads to the frames of the upper two panes, which are top hung. A small timber shop sign board sits above this window. A similar window appears to the right, with a timber and glazed door leading to first floor apartments positioned at the far right. The ground floor facade is finished in roughcast render. Above, the first floor contains two windows positioned directly over and matching those below. The first floor features a mock half timber facade applied over roughcast render, with a square timber shop signboard between the windows and a traditional projecting sign to the right of the right-hand window. A small name plaque reading 'Osmond' is positioned to the left of the shop door.
A large two storey gabled return extends to the rear, fitted with modern windows of varying sizes in a style consistent with the front. The return roof is gabled and covered with asbestos free slates, with a rendered chimney stack, and the return is finished in roughcast.
While a building is recorded on this site in the 1834 Ordnance Survey map, a photograph from the Green Collection dating to circa 1920 shows the site was then occupied by a single storey structure. The present building is therefore either that structure with an additional storey added, or else entirely post-1920 in construction. The shop proprietor believed the roof had been raised a storey, suggesting some original fabric may remain within the ground floor walls. The building is in all material respects mid-twentieth century in character.
