Description
A large, plain two-storey gabled house of approximately 1860-70, now serving as a police station, situated on the south-east side of Main Street in Greyabbey. The building comprises a main two-storey section with a smaller single-storey section attached to its north-east side.
The front north-west elevation is finished in rough-cast render and presents a symmetrical composition. At the centre is a timber-panelled door with a plain fanlight, framed by plain pilasters, entablature and cornice. On either side are two sash windows with wrought iron bars. A similar sash window serves the single-storey section to the left. The first floor contains five evenly-spaced sash windows, each with a single horizontal astragal to each sash. Both gables are blank, with the single-storey section attached to the north-east gable.
The rear elevation is unrendered, revealing rubble construction with brick dressings to openings. A central single-storey gabled return projects from this side, featuring decorative barges. A plain modern security door occupies the south-west side of the return, with a modern PVC window to the north-east side. To the left of the return are two ground-floor windows similar to those on the front facade, the far left being slightly narrower. To the right is a modern PVC window. Four first-floor windows are present: the far left is smaller with a modern frame; the second from the left and far right are sash windows matching the front but smaller; the centre window is sash with an elliptical arch head and margin astragals.
The return is roofed with Bangor blue slates and has PVC rainwater goods. An elliptical archway leading to the rear is located at the south-west gable. The main building's chimneys have been removed. Cast iron rainwater goods serve the main structure.
Modern security modifications include a chain-link fence around the front, security glass to windows, metal shutters to front windows, and a tall radio mast to the rear. A tall free-standing flagpole stands to the front. The building does not appear on the 1834 or circa 1860 Ordnance Survey maps and likely dates from circa 1870. The presence of metal shutters to the front windows suggests it has served as a police station for most of the twentieth century.
