Description
This is a plain, two-storey terrace house dating to circa 1865, situated on the southeastern side of Main Street in Greyabbey. The front facade is finished with lined render, while the rear is rough cast. The roof is covered with Bangor blue slates, and there are two yellow brick chimneys, one shared with the adjacent property at number 11. The rainwater goods are a mixture of cast iron and PVC.
The asymmetrical front elevation features a centrally positioned timber panelled door with a simple fanlight above. To the right is a significantly sized flat-arched coachway, containing plain, sheeted double timber doors with a raised surround and cornice. A sash window with Georgian panes is located to the left of the entrance door, with three similar windows above on the first floor. The rear of the house has two sash windows; one to the far right has Georgian panes, while the window to its left has margins. A modern-looking casement bathroom window sits above the coachway on the rear elevation. A large, single-storey flat-roofed extension projects from the rear, featuring modern windows and is positioned between a gabled former outbuilding, now containing a glazed entrance door leading to the extension’s kitchen area.
Historical records, including Ordnance Survey maps from 1834 and circa 1860, indicate an earlier, smaller building occupied the site of numbers 11 and 13, suggesting that this house and number 11 were constructed after 1860. A photograph from circa 1920 depicts what appears to be a pediment above the coach arch at number 13.
The architectural interest of the building lies in its style and proportions, however, later alterations have negatively impacted its appearance. It also contributes to the group value of the surrounding buildings. The property holds local historical interest.
