Description

Pair of plain double-fronted two storey terrace houses dating from around the 1840s, located on the north-west side of Main Street, Greyabbey. The pair comprises two dwellings of markedly different states of preservation.

The front elevations of both houses follow a similar, almost symmetrical arrangement with a central doorway flanked by a single window on the ground floor, and three evenly spaced windows on the first floor. Both gabled roofs are rendered, with No. 44 (to the south-west) covered in concrete tiles and No. 46 covered in Bangor blue slate. Three concrete brick chimney stacks serve the pair, with plastic rainwater goods fitted to both houses.

No. 44 has been substantially modernised in recent times. It is finished in limestone chip render and fitted with modern glazed doors and two-pane plastic windows throughout. The rear elevation has three modern windows of various sizes on the first floor and two large modern windows flanking a plain timber sheeted door on the ground floor.

No. 46 retains most of its original external features and fenestration. It is finished in lined render with chamfered quoins and still displays sash windows with Georgian glazing bars (6/6 panes) to both front and rear elevations. The ground floor rear contains a plain timber sheeted door with a small modern two-pane window to its left, and two original sash windows with Georgian panes positioned to the right. The first floor rear has two small sash windows with Georgian panes.

The exposed gables of both houses are blank and rendered. An outline of a now-demolished single storey building is visible at the north-east gable of No. 46, which may suggest that No. 46 originally commenced as a single storey dwelling. The rear elevations of both houses are finished in rough cast render. A large outbuilding stands to the rear of both dwellings, with substantial sections of rubble wall dividing the yards.

Documentary evidence from the 1834 Ordnance Survey map suggests there was nothing on the site of No. 44 and only the end of a long terrace where No. 46 now stands, supporting a dating of around the 1840s for both houses.
