Description
This is a relatively plain, two-storey gabled house likely dating to the 1860s. It stands free-standing on the south-east side of Main Street in Greyabbey, Newtownards, and is currently derelict and in a dangerous condition. The front (north-west) elevation is asymmetrical. A doorway is situated to the right of the ground floor, featuring plain pilasters, decorative brackets, a cornice, and remnants of a fanlight, although the door itself is missing. To the left of the doorway are two windows with simple moulded surrounds and brackets under the sills; above them, on the first floor, are three similar windows spaced unevenly. Remaining window frames suggest the presence of original sash windows. The front facade is finished with lined render and moulded, chamfered quoins. Sections of the render have fallen away on the right side, revealing underlying rubble construction with brick quoins and dressings around the doorway. An eaves course is present. The south-west gable is blank and rendered, with areas where the render has broken, exposing brick construction, although the inner side of the wall appears primarily rubble built. The rear elevation has an off-centre doorway without a door, and a blocked window opening on either side. The first floor features two window openings, also without frames. The rear is finished with plain render. The roof is pitched and covered with Bangor blue slates, some of which are missing, with stone parapets. Two rendered chimney stacks are visible, with sections of render missing from the south-west gable stack. Remains of cast iron rainwater goods are present. The immediate south-east side of the house is covered in waste ground. A building appears on Ordnance Survey maps from 1834 and around 1860, though it is difficult to confirm if it corresponds exactly to the present structure. The mid-Victorian style of the front facade suggests it may not have been standing in 1834 but may be the building shown on the later map or dating to the 1860s. Historical records from the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) include valuations and Ordnance Survey maps dating from the 1830s to the early 20th century. A photograph of Main Street, Greyabbey, taken by W.A. Green, appears in the Upper Foyle and Tamlagh Heritage Trust collection.
