12 Main Street, Greyabbey, Newtownards, Co. Down, BT22 2NE

This is a relatively small and simple two-storey late Victorian double-fronted house, now a shop, dating from around 1887. It is situated on the northwest side of Main Street, Greyabbey, within a mixed terrace. The gabled roof is covered in slate and features two yellow brick chimney stacks. There is an overhang at the eaves, along with cast iron ogee gutters and square downspouts.

The southeast-facing front facade features a central doorway with a panelled and glazed timber door and a plain fanlight, all within a surround of plain pilasters, a lintel frieze, and a cornice. The door surround is painted to resemble marble. Sash windows with horizontal and vertical astragals (4/4) are located to the left and right of the door, with matching windows to the first floor, set within gabled half-dormers. The half-dormer roofs also have an overhang. The front facade is finished with plain render, which is painted to give a slightly ‘sponged’ or marbled effect, and features chamfered quoins and a plinth. A small timber shop sign board is positioned to the left of the ground floor left-hand window. A section of the northeast gable is finished in rough cast render, while the southwest gable is blank and also rendered. A small pedestrian gateway, leading to a narrow alleyway between numbers 10 and 12, is attached to the southwest gable. There is no access to the rear, either from the outside or from within the building.

The house was originally built around 1887 for the master of the nearby Greyabbey school, which was constructed in the same year. It is now an antiques shop.
