Description

A short terraced block of three plain single storey houses on the north west side of Main Street in Greyabbey, dating from before 1834. The buildings are finished in rough cast to the front, with a mixture of rough cast and plain render to the rear. All have gabled, slated roofs, with Tullycavey slates used to the rear of No. 16.

Each dwelling features a small gabled dormer to the front with decorative finial, added in the late 19th or early 20th century. The dormer to No. 14 is currently undergoing renovation and has no window; No. 16 has a sash window; and No. 18 is fitted with a modern two pane window with upper opener. To the rear, No. 14 has a large two storey extension that merges into the roof line, whilst No. 18 has a large flat roofed dormer. No. 16 is equipped with a small cast iron skylight to the rear elevation. Three rendered chimney stacks are visible. Cast iron rainwater goods serve the front elevation, with PVC to the rear.

The front south-east facing facade of No. 14 is asymmetrical, featuring a modern timber door with glazed panel to the left, accessed by three stone steps. To the right is a window opening currently without a frame. A large two storey flat roofed extension stands to the rear, fitted with PVC windows. No. 16 has a similar arrangement, with a partly glazed door and sash window dating from around the 1930s-40s. To the rear is a single storey flat roofed extension, with a sash window to the left of the main house. No. 18 has a timber panelled door with decorative wrought iron hand rail to the doorsteps, and to the right a fixed light window with metal grille. Simple timber shop signs are positioned between the door and window. A single storey flat roofed extension or store is located to the rear.

A terrace at this location is shown on the 1834 Ordnance Survey map, likely corresponding to the buildings visible today. These structures may originally have been examples of the 'ground floor' type noted in the 1837 Ordnance Survey Memoir's description of Greyabbey, with the dormers probably added around 1900.
