Description
A relatively plain two-storey terrace house built in the 1840s as two separate dwellings — a house (No. 51) and a shop (No. 53) — which were amalgamated in the 1980s. The property is situated on the south-east side of Main Street, Greyabbey.
The asymmetrical north-west front elevation reflects its origins as two properties. To the right of centre is a timber-panelled door with a simple moulded surround and keystone. To the right of the door is a sash window with 'Georgian' panes and a similar surround. Immediately to the left of the door is another similar window, which formerly served as the doorway to No. 53. To the left of this is a larger fixed window with many 'Georgian' panes. The first floor has four evenly-spaced windows with 'Georgian' panes, made to resemble sash windows but with small upper openers. The front facade is finished in plain render with chamfered quoins and painted. The north-east gable is blank and rendered, with a modern garage with mono-pitched roof attached.
The rear elevation has two small sash windows with 'Georgian' panes on the first floor and French doors on the ground floor to the right. The left side of the ground floor has a large porch with a corrugated transparent PVC flat roof, containing a glazed kitchen door and a modern kitchen window. The rear is finished in plain render and painted. The gabled roof is covered with asbestos slates to the front and a mixture of asbestos and asbestos-free slates to the rear. There is a rendered chimney stack and PVC rainwater goods. Remains of rubble-built outbuildings survive in the back garden.
The moulding to the window and door openings is probably not original and may date from the early twentieth century. A building is shown on this site on the 1834 Ordnance Survey map, though the building visible today is more likely to be slightly later in date.
