Description

88 Main Street, Greyabbey, is a substantial two-storey rendered gabled house built around 1854, now serving as a shop and residence. The building is situated within a terrace on the north-west side of Main Street.

The front south-east elevation was originally symmetrical but this balance has been disrupted by the addition of a simple shop front dating from around 1890-1900. The ground floor features a central main entrance with a panelled timber door and a fanlight with decorative iron tracery. This entrance is framed by relatively plain pilasters, a lintel frieze and cornice, with a blocking course curved into the window sill directly above. To the left of the main doorway is a sash window with vertical astragals in a 2/2 configuration, surrounded by simple moulding. To the right stands the shop front, comprising a timber panelled door with a plain fanlight flanked by fixed light windows with Georgian panes. The entire shop front is finished with simple moulded surround, which is not original to the building. The application of this moulding has necessitated extension of the cills beneath it and the upper floor windows to provide support.

The first floor contains three evenly spaced windows matching the ground floor arrangement on the left, with the centre window featuring horizontal astragals in a 4/4 pattern. The front facade is finished in lined render with chamfered quoins and plinth. The render was painted at some point but the paint has largely worn away. The south-west gable is blank and unrendered, revealing rubble construction beneath.

A large two-storey flat-roofed return extends to the rear, fitted with a mixture of metal and small modern timber fixed light windows. The main house features sashed windows with Georgian panes to the rear, finished in rough cast render. The main gabled roof is slated with rendered parapets and two yellow brick chimneys. Cast iron rainwater goods are present. Outbuildings exist to the rear but are largely obscured by vegetation.

The shop front and window surrounds were likely added between 1890 and 1900, along with the rear return, fundamentally altering the original symmetrical appearance of the 1854 house.
