Description
A large, formal two-storey rendered Georgian gabled house of around 1800, situated at the south-east end of North Street near its intersection with Main Street, at the north end of Greyabbey village.
The front south-west elevation is symmetrical and finished in lined render and paint, with chamfered quoins. The gables and rear are finished in rough cast. The pitched roof is covered with Bangor blue slates, has stone parapets, and three rendered chimney stacks with cast iron rainwater goods.
The main entrance to the ground floor is positioned centrally and comprises a relatively narrow panelled timber door flanked by large plain sidelights, surmounted by a very large semicircular fanlight with distinctive 'spider web' tracery. The doorway is encased with simple fluted pilasters and a simple surround to the arch with a decorative keystone. A large single tripartite sash window with Georgian panes is positioned to both left and right of the doorway. Three similar evenly spaced windows occupy the first floor, each with simple surrounds and keystones as the doorway, with small brackets to the cills and cill course. The south-east gable has a plain sash window with plain render surround at the far left of the ground floor, a small modern window with patterned glass at the far right, and a small six-pane attic window high in the gable. A high rendered wall attached to the centre of the ground floor of this gable encloses the rear garden; faint outlines in the render indicate that a smaller building once adjoined here, confirmed by the 1834 Ordnance Survey map. A single-storey lean-to kitchen extension is attached to the ground floor of the north-west gable, now with modern windows and a rear door, with a tiny four-pane attic window high in the gable. The rear elevation has a low plain sheeted timber door at the far left with a tiny window immediately to its right and another tiny window just above, between ground and first floor level. At the far right is a sash window with Georgian panes. The first floor has two similar sash windows to right and left, with evidence of a blocked similar-sized window opening to the centre.
A bill of works dated 1864, discovered during recent interior restoration, suggests that two square Victorian bays formerly present on the ground floor, the kitchen extension to the north-west gable, and possibly the decorative treatment of the main entrance and first-floor front windows all date from this period, though this is not certain. The owner in 1997 confirmed the building dates from around 1800 and appears to be that shown on the 1834 Ordnance Survey map. In around 1984 the current owner carried out major renovation work, removing the two square Victorian bays from the ground floor and installing tripartite windows to both ground and first floors. The window at the far left of the south-east façade is not original to the building.
Remnants of rubble-built outbuildings survive to the rear. A low rendered garden wall bounds the front.
