Description

This is a small, folly-like, Gothick "summer house" dating to around 1800, with an extension to the north end added in the 1990s. The building is situated on a wooded hill on the northwestern outskirts of Greyabbey. The walls are finished with plain render, and the roof is gabled, covered in Bangor blue slates, and includes several Velux windows. The original front gable faces roughly south and features corner pilasters with battered plinths that rise to tall, pyramidal pinnacles flanking a crow-stepped gable parapet. Four steps with integrated slate seats lead to a narrow, central door flanked by matching windows. The door and windows each have tall glazed upper portions over small timber panels. Directly above is an equilateral arch recess with mock arrow loop features reminiscent of medieval crosses, and a quatrefoil recess is located at the gable apex. The north gable is blank. The window and door openings on the long side walls have been recently altered and incorporate a mixture of timber frames. The rear (north) end has been recently extended and is slightly taller than the original section.

The building is believed to have been constructed around 1800 by Hugh Montgomery, then owner of Rosemount House, likely serving as a sketching house or summer retreat. It is thought that members of the Montgomery family or guests at Rosemount might have used the Gothick room at the front, while food was prepared at the rear. It may also have been occupied by an estate worker and his family for part of its history. The building is shown on the 1834 Ordnance Survey map as "The Cottage". It has recently been extended and renovated, with the original Gothick room awaiting restoration.
