Description

This is a late Victorian, double-fronted, two-storey gabled house dating from the 1880s to 1890s, situated on the north-west side of Main Street, Greyabbey, near its junction with North Street. The house has a large two-storey return and has undergone recent alterations with a dry dash finish.

The main house and its return feature an eaves course, while the front facade, gables of the main house and north-east facade and the gable of the return are finished with a limestone chip dry dash render, with smooth cement render to the edges of the walls and smooth cement bands to the gables. The remainder of the house is finished with lined render. All roofs are gabled, covered with Bangor blue slates, and have rendered parapets. There are two yellow brick chimney stacks on the main house and one on the gable of the return. Cast iron gutters and downspouts are present.

The front, south-east elevation is symmetrical, centred on a doorway with a timber panelled door and a segmental arch fanlight, all enclosed within pilasters with floral caps, a frieze lintel and a cornice. Steps lead to the front doorway, and a low rendered wall runs along the front. Flanking the doorway are three-sided, single-storey, flat-roofed bay windows with segmental arch head window openings and plain sash windows. These bays have moulded eaves. The first floor consists of five similar but smaller windows, with timber frames designed to resemble sash windows. The two outermost windows on each side are paired, and a smooth render cill band connects all first-floor windows. The south-west and north-east gables are blank.

A large two-storey gabled return extends to the rear, incorporating a mixture of modern and original windows and a modern glazed door on the right side. A large, single-storey lean-to extension is located at the intersection of the south-west side of the return and the main house. The property was built on the site of a former terrace, likely consisting of single-storey dwellings, as shown on an Ordnance Survey map from 1834.
