Description

2B The Square, Greyabbey is a narrow-fronted two-storey hipped roof house of possible early to mid 18th century construction. It is situated on a corner of The Square, with its south-east elevation (now the front) facing the square and its north elevation set in a narrow sloping lane.

The property may originally have formed part of a much larger single building, incorporating the single-storey hall to the south-west and the two-storey section beyond it (now part of another house). Local tradition suggests this original building was symmetrical, with the two-storey sections flanking a single-storey centre, constructed between approximately 1725 and 1735, and that it served as a coaching inn. The building may correspond to the 'handsome brick houses covered with slates' mentioned by Walter Harris around 1744. At that time, the road to Newtownards ran through what is now the western entrance to the Rosemount estate, past the side of the inn where the steep lane now exists. In the 1820s this road was redirected further up Main Street. By this point, a house had been built on to the south-west two-storey section. Local tradition suggests the single-storey centre section was subsequently used as a school and later as a court house, with judges' rooms in the two-storey sections to the north-east. It is now a private residence.

The front elevation features a modern glazed double-door entrance on the left, inserted into a space previously occupied by a smaller window opening. Above this is a sash window with Georgian panes. The north-east elevation follows the narrow lane and cants slightly to the north-west at the right-hand side. This elevation has two windows to the ground floor and two smaller ones directly above to the first floor, all matching the front sash windows. A doorway previously existed between the two ground-floor windows but has been blocked up. On the right-hand side of this elevation, where it slants to the north-east, there is a timber-sheeted door. To the right of this, the lane rises steeply and the facade merges into a wall enclosing the rear of the house. This wall has a large modern metal sliding garage door covering a large flat arch, and modern moulded concrete balustrades to the wall top.

The roof is largely hipped with Bangor blue slates and two rendered chimney stacks. The facade is finished in roughcast with smooth rendered 'in and out' dressings to window and door openings, a cill band to the first floor, and a chamfered plinth.

The door and window openings have been altered in recent years, with recent renovations to the neighbouring hall revealing roof timbers marked with a date of 1725.
