Description

This is a small, single-story vernacular house likely dating to before 1834, situated on a slight rise to the south of Hillsborough Road, approximately 1.5 miles southwest of Comber in County Down. The front (east) facade features a centrally positioned, plain timber door. To the left of the door are two sash windows with Georgian panes, and a similar window sits to the right of the door. Both gables are blank. A small four-pane window is located near the center of the rear facade. The exterior is finished in rough cast, with some areas of flaking. The roof is covered in Bangor blue slates, and there are three unevenly spaced rendered chimney stacks. The building lacks rainwater goods; a water tank is positioned against the rear facade, supported by breeze blocks. A modern replacement dwelling stands a short distance to the southwest. The house has been vacant for several years and is in a state of disrepair.

A building is depicted on Ordnance Survey maps from 1834 and 1858, likely corresponding to the current structure. It was not included in the valuation returns of 1834, presumably due to being below the rateable value. Records from the second valuation of 1863 are unavailable, hindering a detailed understanding of the house’s history. According to the current owner, the house was last lived in by a Mr. Jameson (deceased) who reportedly received it as a wedding present. A replacement dwelling has been constructed a few yards to the southwest. The building exhibits vernacular architectural style and demonstrates local interest.
