Description

This is a small, one and a half-storey house, likely dating from the 1840s, situated on the north-west side of Old Ballygowan Road, approximately one and a quarter miles south of Comber. The front (east) façade features a prominent 'Ards' doorway, characterised by plain pilasters and an archivolt framing a panelled and glazed door with a semicircular fanlight. The door surround is rendered with a texture resembling Tyrolean finish. Flanking the doorway are windows with smooth rendered surrounds, now fitted with modern frames designed to resemble sash windows with Georgian panes. The south gable slopes into a small lean-to section on the left-hand side. A ground-floor window is positioned on this gable. Two smaller windows are set into the attic level of the south gable. A further small window is located in the attic level of the north gable. A small lean-to coal bunker is situated at ground floor level on the north gable. At the rear, a full-height return section includes windows mirroring the front façade on its north and south faces. This return gable connects to a long, gabled, single-storey extension added in the 1980s. The main house and return are finished with rough cast render and painted. The front roof is covered in Bangor blue slates, while the rear and return are covered in asbestos-free slates. Two rendered chimney stacks are present, along with Velux windows in the return roof. Modern PVC rainwater goods are in place.

An earlier building occupied the site of the rear extension as shown on an Ordnance Survey map from 1834, and a building of a similar shape appears on a map dating from 1858-60, suggesting the current property’s form largely dates from the mid-19th century. The large extension to the rear was constructed around 1980.
