Description

The building at 71 Rostrevor Road, Hilltown, Newry, was a vernacular house, likely constructed around 1900. Although buildings are depicted at this location on Ordnance Survey maps from 1834 and 1859, they do not match the plan or orientation of the house that stood there until its recent demolition. The 1902 Ordnance Survey map shows the site in its later form.

The house, as it appeared in 1977, was a single-storey, three-bay structure. It had a pitched roof covered in natural slate, with clay tile skews. The walls were rendered and whitewashed, with a whitewashed lime dash finish. A whitewashed and rendered chimney was located on the party wall between the left and central bays, and another was on the right gable. Rainwater goods were absent.

The main entrance was within a shallow, gabled porch abutting the right side of the central bay. The porch roof was partially integrated with the main roof and featured a fretted timber bargeboard. The porch walls matched the main house, with a doorway to the front and a blank space on the right side; the left side was likely also blank. A 6/6 sliding sash window with horns was positioned to the left of the porch, with similar windows in the remaining bays. The left gable and rear elevation were not visible in the photographic record. The right gable was blank and adjoined a lean-to outbuilding with a lean-to roof and sheeted door. Further outbuildings at the rear consisted of rendered walls, natural and corrugated metal roofs, and a sheeted door.

The original building has been demolished, and a replacement dwelling now occupies the site.
